Smile design is a planning method in cosmetic dentistry. Before any tooth is prepared, the dentist studies your teeth, gums, lips, and face together and designs how a new smile could look, considering tooth size, shape, colour, the gum line, and how everything sits within your features. The aim is to agree a clear target for the result, rather than discovering it only once work has begun.
Often this is done digitally, using photographs, video, and scans to build a model of the proposed smile that can be laid over an image of your face. Many dentists also produce a physical or temporary mock up you can see or wear, so the plan becomes something you can judge in your own mouth. Used well, it improves the conversation between you and the dentist and makes the outcome more predictable.
It is worth being clear about what smile design is not. A preview is a plan, not a promise. The real result depends on the underlying treatment, whether that is veneers, crowns, bonding, or orthodontics, on the health of your teeth and gums, and on the skill of the work. A polished image on a screen does not guarantee a polished result, and a design that removes too much healthy tooth structure can carry a long term cost.

The harder questions are clinical, not visual. Ask how much natural tooth will be removed, whether your gums and bite are healthy enough for the plan, what the alternatives are, and what happens if you are unhappy once you are home. Be cautious of designs that promise a dramatic change very fast or that prepare many healthy teeth at once. The picture is the easy part; the lasting result depends on conservative, well judged work and honest expectations.
