Refund policy

The written rules that set out whether, when, and how much of the money you pay for treatment can be returned. Here is what it means and why it deserves close reading before you pay.

General health information, not medical advice, and not a substitute for a qualified doctor. Always consult a licensed professional before making any decision.

In plain language

The rules on getting money back.

A refund policy is only as good as what it says in writing. A friendly promise on a call is not a policy, and verbal assurances are hard to enforce across a border.

A refund policy is the written statement of whether money you have paid will be returned to you, in what circumstances, and how much. For treatment, it usually covers situations such as cancelling before the procedure, a clinic cancelling on you, being found unsuitable at a screening once you arrive, or a treatment that cannot be completed as planned. The detail matters: a policy may offer a full refund, a partial refund, a credit toward a future booking, or nothing at all, depending on the stage at which you withdraw.

Deposits are where most confusion sits. A deposit paid to hold a date or booking is often described as non refundable, meaning it is kept if you change your mind, though it is usually set against the total if you go ahead. That can be reasonable, since the clinic reserves time and resources, but the amount and the conditions should be clear in writing before you pay. A vague or missing refund policy is itself a warning sign.

It is worth separating a refund from a guarantee of results. A clinic might refund a booking fee if you cancel, yet offer nothing if you are simply unhappy with how a procedure turned out, which is a different matter entirely. No honest provider can promise a specific medical outcome, so be cautious of marketing that blurs a money back offer with a promise that the treatment will work.

Why it matters abroad

Harder to enforce at a distance.

When you pay a provider in another country, the refund policy is governed by the law and the contract of that country, not your own. Chasing a refund from abroad can be slow, costly, and uncertain, and consumer protections you would rely on at home may not apply. That is why the written terms and the way you pay both matter. Some payment methods offer their own protection if a service is not delivered, which can be more useful than a clause you would struggle to enforce in a foreign court.

Before you pay anything, read the refund and cancellation terms in full and ask for them in writing if they are not already. Check what happens if you are turned away at screening, if the clinic reschedules, or if you need to cancel for medical reasons, and confirm whether a deposit is refundable and what it is set against. Treat a reluctance to put any of this in writing as a reason to pause. A clear, fair, written policy is a basic sign of a provider worth dealing with.
