A quote in another currency is not a fixed sum in yours. The exchange rate shifts every day, so what you actually pay can drift up or down.
Currency risk is the chance that movements in the exchange rate change the real cost of something priced in a foreign currency. When a clinic abroad quotes you in euros, dollars, or another currency, the amount in your home currency is not locked. Between the day you are quoted and the day you actually pay, the rate moves, so the same foreign price can end up costing you more or less than you first expected.
For treatment abroad this matters because the gap between quote and payment is often weeks or months, and the sums are large. A quote that looks like a clear saving can shrink if your currency weakens before you pay, and a deposit now plus a balance later means you pay two different amounts at two different rates. The headline figure is only ever an estimate in your own money until the payment clears.
The way you pay adds its own costs that behave like currency risk. Card networks and banks apply their own exchange rate and often a fee, and a trap called dynamic currency conversion lets a foreign card machine or website offer to charge you in your home currency at a poor rate that looks convenient but costs more. Cash withdrawals abroad and international transfers each carry their own rates and charges too.
Budget for the swing, not just the quote.
Treat a foreign quote as a moving target. Convert it to your own currency on the day you compare, then leave a margin for the rate to move against you before you pay, so the saving still holds if your currency dips. The closer the foreign price is to what you would pay at home, the more a small rate move can erase the difference entirely.
When you pay, watch how the conversion is done. Always choose to be charged in the clinic's local currency rather than accepting dynamic currency conversion into your own, since the machine's rate is usually worse. Compare what your bank, a card, and a specialist transfer service would each cost for the same payment, and confirm in writing which currency the quote and any balance are set in. You cannot remove currency risk, but you can keep it small, see it clearly, and avoid paying more than you need to in fees on top.
